Sole Branch RVN Jobs: Map the Support Before You Accept
Being the only RVN based at a branch does not reveal who is available when the list changes, a patient needs transfer or you are away. Trace the working support system across a real week before deciding.

Define what “sole RVN” means on each shift
Ask for a representative two-week rota showing every vet, SVN, VCA and receptionist working at the branch, including lunch cover, late finishes and known single-person gaps. Mark when another RVN is physically present, reachable at a nearby site or not scheduled. One current Goddard Vet Group vacancy describes the post as the sole RVN at its Eastcote branch, working closely with a lead vet, supporting students and joining weekend shifts at a nearby hospital. That is one employer's arrangement, not a standard definition. Your first task is to replace the label with the actual people and overlap available on each shift.
Trace three cases through the branch network
Ask the interviewer to walk through three recent, anonymised examples: a routine patient that stayed at the branch, a case transferred during opening hours and a patient redirected to out-of-hours care. Record who made each decision, who contacted the receiving team, how notes and results travelled, who arranged transport and who followed up the next day. RCVS guidance says relevant clinical information should be provided promptly when responsibility for a case changes, with proper documentation for referred or redirected cases. The useful job evidence is therefore a repeatable handover route, not simply the name of a hospital elsewhere in the group.
Check the vet contact and escalation chain
Separate physical overlap from access to advice. For theatre, consults, inpatients, urgent calls and unexpected changes, ask which veterinary surgeon is responsible, how they are contacted and what happens when that person is consulting, operating, travelling or off duty. The RCVS Code requires veterinary nurses to work within their area of competence, communicate with veterinary colleagues and refer responsibly. This is not a test of whether you can manage every situation alone. It is a test of whether the employer has designed a clear escalation chain around the work it expects you to perform. Use the Schedule 3 job-questions guide for a separate check on delegation, confidence and access to veterinary help.
Separate clinical nursing from branch ownership
Put every recurring duty into one of four columns: clinical nursing, student or team support, branch administration and facilities or stock. Current sole-branch advertising can combine theatre and consultations with inpatient records, stock ordering, reception cover, staff induction and clinical supervision. Ask how much scheduled time each column receives, who covers clinical work when stock or staffing problems arise, and which decisions need manager approval. If the post includes rota, performance or budget responsibility, compare those boundaries with the Head Nurse role check rather than assuming extra accountability is included in an ordinary RVN title.
Test cover for leave, sickness and development
Ask who supplies qualified-nurse cover during annual leave, sickness, paid CPD time and student-assessment work. Then ask what happened on the most recent unplanned absence: which work continued, which was moved and who decided. RCVS clinical-governance guidance calls for clear patient-safety protocols, effective case handovers, access to more experienced colleagues and systems for reviewing competence and development. A workable answer names people, sites and thresholds rather than relying on “the wider team can help”. Compare the proposed week with the RVN rota and support job check and verify that protected development time remains usable when branch cover is tight.
Write the branch dependency map into the offer
Before accepting, request a written summary of base site, expected cross-site work, normal vet overlap, weekend and bank-holiday rotation, on-call or OOH duties, transfer destination, mileage or travel terms, student-supervision responsibility, stock or reception duties, absence cover and review support. Put salary beside contracted hours, paid breaks, overtime or TOIL, CPD money and time, professional-fee support and any additional branch responsibility; the veterinary nurse salary guide can help you compare the whole package without assuming a market rate. Browse current veterinary nurse jobs and all jobs, or set job alerts, but judge each role from its own written support map.
